July 24, 2012 SOUTHBRIDGE — Area response is generally positive toward the Senate's recent passage of an expanded bottle bill, after almost 15 years of trying.
It was formally attached as an amendment to the most recent jobs bill, and passed by voice vote last week. The House, however, had already approved the bill without a bottle bill amendment, so the two versions will go to a conference committee.
"We hope the conference committee will keep it," said Patrick O'Connor, spokesman for Minority Leader Robert Hedlund, a Weymouth Republican who has been one of the expansion bill's sponsors for years. He said he feels the Senate favored it because of a newly released report finding that expansion would create around 1,500 jobs statewide and "protect the 500 redemption center jobs that currently exist."
