August 08, 2012 SOUTHBRIDGE — About 2,760 residents lost power Saturday, Aug. 4, when a key power line serving downtown came down in the 600 block of Main Street.
Even National Grid spokesman David Graves noted such an occurrence is "relatively rare." He said all but 50 customers were restored within an hour of the 11:47 a.m. failure, with the remainder going back online around 4 p.m. that date.
"The connection let loose. It happens," Graves observed. "We know that day was very hot, very humid. I'm sure there was increased demand, and that sometimes causes [the lines] to overheat, sag, and carry extra weight," so they snap at their connection points.
